Message From Program Director

At the Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine residency, we pride ourselves on providing comprehensive training that prepares our resident physicians for all aspects of Emergency Medicine. Our program offers an excellent place to live and work in the picturesque Roanoke Valley. The diverse patient population and the affordable cost of living create a work-life balance that is hard to find anywhere else.

Our resident experience includes exposure to all different settings of the Emergency Medicine field. Most of the training occurs at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, our academic-based Level I Trauma Center, with 84,000 visits per year, with a 30% admit rate. In addition to this high-acuity, high-volume experience, residents rotate through our community and rural sites, all within a short drive away. Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital provides the opportunity to experience emergency medicine in a rural setting, with a 12-bed ED that sees 23,000 patients per year, a 16-bed inpatient unit, and a 4-bed ICU. Residents learn what it's like to practice with only the assistance of a Hospitalist and General Surgeon in-house while learning how to utilize regional resources and the transfer system. Carilion New River Valley Hospital is a classic example of practicing in a busy community with typical community resources.  CNRV is a level II trauma center that sees 35,000 patients annually with ample specialty coverage in surgery, orthopedics, OB/GYN, peds, cardiology, urology, GI, and IR.

Our commitment to your development as a future leader in Emergency Medicine is evident in our tailored curriculum and the wide range of opportunities we offer. With fellowships like Wilderness Medicine, EMS, Ultrasound, and rotations through our community sites, we have the resources to guide and mentor you into the field of your choice, inspiring you to reach your full potential.
