Message From Program Director

The Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency offers comprehensive training in Emergency Medicine, preparing our graduates to excel in any care setting. With training sites ranging from urban to rural and an emphasis on providing the highest level of medical care to the population of Southwest Virginia, we truly embrace the Carilion Clinic motto: “To improve the health of the communities we serve.”

Our primary training site, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, is an academic, tertiary care facility and the only Level I Trauma Center in Western Virginia. In addition to this high-acuity, high-volume experience, residents rotate through our community and rural sites, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, ensuring exposure to emergency medicine across the entire continuum of care.

Our curriculum, state-of-the-art simulation lab, and clinical exposure to ED Observation, ED Psychiatry, and clinical research and innovations are intentionally designed to facilitate your development into leaders in Emergency Medicine. Historically, approximately 40% of our graduates pursue a fellowship and a career in academic emergency medicine, while the remainder opt for community practice. With a robust clinical faculty of 70+ physicians, we emphasize the creation of meaningful mentoring relationships. When we say, “Welcome to the VTCEM family,” we genuinely mean it.

In addition to our robust clinical training, Roanoke is an exceptional place to work and live.  Tucked into the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke offers access to the outdoors while boasting a multicultural and diverse population. Our training program offers a distinctive blend of training and quality of life that sets us apart from other institutions.
