Family Medicine Residency
Glad you're here!
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Family Medicine Residency!
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Statement
At Carilion Clinic Graduate Medical Education (GME), we believe that embracing diversity, promoting equity and fostering inclusion are vital and integral to cultivating a vibrant, compassionate and socially responsible healthcare workforce that serves diverse patient populations and achieves optimal patient outcomes. Together, we strive to create an environment that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and provides an equitable platform for all residents to excel and make a meaningful impact in their medical careers.
- Diversity
We recognize and appreciate the richness that diversity brings to both our medical and GME community. We believe that a diverse community of residents, faculty and staff enhances our collective ability to provide patient-centered care, engage in innovative research and develop cultural humility within our health care professionals.
- Equity
We are dedicated to creating an equitable and fair environment where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive, grow and succeed. We are committed to identifying and addressing any systemic barriers that may hinder the advancement of individuals from historically marginalized or underrepresented groups within our GME community.
- Inclusion
We strive to foster an inclusive culture where every member of our GME community feels respected, valued and included. We embrace the power of diverse perspectives, experiences and ideas to drive innovation, collaboration and excellence. We aim to create a sense of belonging, where individuals can bring their authentic selves into this program to the table, contributing to a vibrant and enriching community.
- Accountability
We hold ourselves accountable to these principles by regularly assessing our progress, identifying areas for improvement and taking action to address disparities and promote inclusivity within our GME programs. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Learning Environment Advisory Committee and the Carilion Clinic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office provide part of that accountability.
The Annual Institutional Review Plan for Carilion GMEC includes specific outcomes for diversity and inclusion, such as reviewing all curricula to foster an inclusive and anti-bias learning environment; assessing each program’s method of trainee evaluation to assure they are fair and equitable; and developing and monitoring each program’s plan to recruit a diverse group of residents, fellows, faculty and staff.
Virginia Tech Partnership
Residents and fellows work closely with the students, medical educators, and research scientists from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. This partnership leverages Virginia Tech’s world-class strength in basic sciences, bioinformatics and engineering with Carilion Clinic’s highly experienced medical staff and rich history in graduate medical education.
