Application Process

Beginning September 2026, the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Anesthesiology Residency Program will accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the 2027 Residency Match (for training beginning July 1, 2027). All communications to candidates will comply with the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) timelines and regulations, and with the Society of Academic Association of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM) recommendations. 

Carilion Clinic adheres to all local, state, and federal employment laws and regulations. All applications will be reviewed by the Anesthesiology Residency Program Application Committee and are considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, age, national origin, veteran status, disability, gender, or other protected criteria. 

Recruitment Timeline & Interview Coordination
  • Application Review: following registration open in mid-September, our program will begin reviewing applications at the end of September 2026.
  • Interview Scheduling: interviews will be released on a rolling basis and will be conducted between late October and mid-January.
  • Uniform Interview Format: following recommendations from SAAAPM, our program will conduct only virtual interviews. In-person second look events may be scheduled following the final rank list submission.
  • Program Signaling: to prioritize application review, we recommend candidates signal their interest in the program using Gold and Silver signals
  • Couples Matching: our program is committed to ensuring the best fit for candidates and will communicate with partners in other departments to coordinate the best possible interview dates for candidates participating in couples matching.
Admission Requirements
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • USMLE passing scores for Step 1 and Step 2 
  • Osteopathic candidates are not required, but encouraged to provide USMLE scores
  • Application completed via ERAS
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, one of which should be from the Department Chair
  • J1 Visa sponsorship only
Typical Interview Day 

Our virtual interviews typically take place on Fridays via Zoom and are either in the morning or afternoon depending on preference. A typical interview day lasts approximately four (4) hours. There will be a program overview by the Program Director, and interview portion in which candidates are paired with individual faculty for one-on-one sessions, and question and answer session from current Carilion Clinic trainees. 

Pre-Interview and Employment Details
  • In advance of the scheduled interview day, candidates will receive detailed information regarding the program including a sample contract, Carilion Clinic fact sheet, Resident Benefits Flyer, and Resident Benefit Contribution Summary. 
  • Candidates will be asked to electronically sign an acknowledgment of receipt of program materials. 
  • Prior to matriculation into the program, matched candidates will be required to pass a preemployment drug screen, pass a criminal background check, obtain a temporary medical license in the state of Virginia, obtain J1 Visa status if needed, and complete onboarding paperwork and preemployment tasks.
