Welcome to our Anesthesiology Residency Program!
It is my privilege to introduce a training environment built on excellence in clinical care, education, research, and service. Our mission is to prepare highly skilled anesthesiologists who demonstrate unwavering commitment to patient safety, professionalism, and lifelong learning. Our vision is to foster a community where curiosity, compassion, and collaboration thrive.
As a new program, we offer a unique opportunity to help shape the culture, curriculum, and values of our residency alongside a team of deeply dedicated faculty. Our training model integrates comprehensive hands‑on clinical experience with robust opportunities in scholarship, leadership, and quality improvement. Faculty across every major subspecialty bring exceptional expertise and a true passion for mentorship, ensuring that each resident is supported in achieving their individual goals and aspirations.

Program Mission and Aims
Mission Statement
The Virginia Tech Carilion Anesthesiology Residency Program is dedicated to training outstanding anesthesiologists who deliver exceptional patient care to the communities they serve, while fostering a culture of compassion, intellectual curiosity, and scholarship to cultivate future leaders in the field of anesthesiology.
Program Aims
- Train clinically excellent anesthesiologists by providing a robust clinical and didactic curriculum
- Develop physician level problem-solving skills and sound clinical judgment by allowing graduated and progressive patient care responsibility with strong mentorship
- Teach academic curiosity and promote evidence-based practice by pursuing scholarship and research activity throughout the residency program
- Impart values of commitment and service to patients and community
- Foster a diverse, inclusive, and compassionate training environment that allows for health and wellness while resisting burnout
- Incorporate the unique challenges of providing care to a diverse and far-reaching Appalachian population into clinical training
Virginia Tech Partnership
Residents and fellows work closely with the students, medical educators, and research scientists from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. This partnership leverages Virginia Tech’s world-class strength in basic sciences, bioinformatics and engineering with Carilion Clinic’s highly experienced medical staff and rich history in graduate medical education.
