Our Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to include all aspects of the six competency areas for Critical Care as outlined in ACGME’s Program Requirements, with an overall curriculum repeated every 12 months.
Didactic Sessions
The fellows will participate in the following Core Curriculum Conferences:
- Weekly: Critical Care faculty and fellow Core Lectures, weekly case conferences, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship lectures, Internal Medicine Grand Rounds, Surgery Grand Rounds, and fellows have the opportunity to attend the PCCM Core Lectures as desired
- Monthly: Critical Care Journal Clubs, M&M Conferences, research conferences, ED/CC Multidisciplinary conference, hospital Critical Care Committee meetings
- Quarterly: the GME Core Curriculum
- Yearly: Critical Care In-Training Examinations
Procedural Exposure
Fellows are exposed to numerous procedures at Carilion Clinic, including:
- Abdominal paracentesis
- Arterial line placement (radial, femoral)
- Central venous line placement (internal jugular, subclavian, femoral)
- Chest tube insertion
- Endotracheal Intubation
- Flexible bronchoscopy with conscious sedation
- Large bore central venous catheter (dialysis catheter or Cordis/trauma catheter)
- Lumbar puncture
- Percutaneous tracheostomy
- Pleural pigtail placement
- Pulmonary arterial catheter placement
- Thoracentesis with ultrasound
