Emergency Medical Services Program Overview

The Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Fellowship program is a university-based program nestled in the heart of southwest Virginia between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. Our fellowship program offers a heavy focus on field experiences to develop fellows into strong EMS field physicians. Our area is fortunate to be able to offer a multi-system and agency experience through paid, volunteer and private EMS agencies. Fellows will operate as an associate medical director to both metro and rural systems, responding in a dedicated, marked, licensed response vehicle. We also have a hospital-based air medical program, pediatric transport team and tactical medicine options.

Message From Program Director

Welcome to the VTC-Carilion Clinic EMS Fellowship! Our mission here is to train physicians to become active medical directors with the knowledge and ability to lead their services in the field and in the hospital. We focus heavily on the hands-on aspects of medical direction and provide opportunities to work in both ground and air EMS systems with exposure to urban, rural and hospital-based interfacility care. Our unique catchment area offers experiences with services ranging from large career agencies to small volunteer rescue squads, and various opportunities in specialized disciplines ranging from tactical medicine to technical rescue. Additionally, the EMS fellow will be exposed to real world mass gathering medical direction at Virginia Tech football games and other events. Our partnerships with Virginia Tech School of Medicine offer unparalleled access to research support and the ability for the fellow to pursue a master’s degree if so desired. The ongoing investment by Carilion Clinic in medical education also offers access to high-fidelity simulation through the Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety located right here on the Carilion campus. My goal as the program director is to ensure that fellows leave our program confident in their ability to lead their future services. Our focus on operational EMS medical direction ensures that you will have the necessary exposure to real world problem solving with the support of our faculty to accomplish that goal during your time in this program. I encourage you to consider the VTC-Carilion Clinic EMS Fellowship for your future education as an EMS physician. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with you in our progressive and dynamic learning environment to help you achieve your personal goals. Feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any assistance.
