Infectious Diseases Fellowship
Admission Requirements
All application materials must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Our program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) for Infectious Diseases.
Virginia Tech Carilion Graduate Medical Education programs follow the eligibility criteria for fellow applicants established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program has an all-in policy, which does not allow for pre-matching of applicants.
- Requirements for application
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Board eligibility/certification in internal medicine (ABIM or American College of Osteopathic Internal Medicine; this requirement implies having successfully completed Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the USMLE and/or COMLEX exams)
- 3 letters of reference (one preferably from the applicant's residency program director)
- Preferably, completion of residency within the last five years
- An updated copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae
- Prior research experience (clinical or basic science) is desirable but not a requirement
- What to expect on interview day
- Once all application documents have been received through ERAS, our program will reach out to each qualified individual to arrange an interview. The program typically offers interviews on Wednesdays to allow for exposure to our conference day. The program will work with applicants to accommodate other dates as available.
- The interview process includes an online zoom interview which includes one-on-one interviews with faculty members, attending case conferences and a chance to speak via Zoom with the current Fellows.
- Our program will then rank applicants in NRMP based on a combination of ERAS documents and interview day impressions.
- The Infectious Disease program does encourage a visit to the Roanoke area if you are not familiar with the area. It is a beautiful area with many activities, restaurants and outdoor fun.
