Infectious Diseases Fellowship

What are your career interests?
I would love to get involved in the local public health department at some point in my career. I also have a particular interest in virology, tick-borne diseases, and tropical/travel medicine. Finally, I would like my career to involve teaching medical students and residents. 

Why did you choose VA Tech Carilion Clinic for residency training?
I am originally from Salem, Virginia so it was a priority for me to be closer to family after medical school. I completed my residency here as well and after working with the internal medicine and ID faculty, it was a no-brainer to stay. Most importantly, all the ID attendings and other members of the department are not only intelligent and great teachers, but are also kind and welcoming.

What are your career interests?
It has been my experience that career interests change as new learning opportunities arise and are significantly influenced by the academic environment and seasoned mentors. My current career interests include endocarditis, bone and joint infections, and immunocompromised host. I am particularly interested in the studies behind biofilm and its challenge to deliver effective infection treatments.

Why did you choose VA Tech Carilion Clinic for residency training?
During my interview, I was impressed with the self-sufficiency and organization of the program along with the research opportunities offered to the fellow. The team appeared to be cohesive, and I felt harmony in my interview and later confirmed with an on site visit with the program leadership, who were welcoming and generous with their time. I look forward to learning the field of ID and participating in the travel clinic. I am also eager to serve the local community. The fact that Carilion is located in an outdoorsy mountain city with stunning views is a pleasant fortune.
