Living in Roanoke
Roanoke and the surrounding counties are an outdoor-lover's paradise. With over 400 miles of paved and natural surface trails, our city is perfect for biking, running, and walking. The Roanoke Greenway is a 14-mile paved path that runs directly next to CRMH as well as several outpatient clinics. The Greenway is great for working out before or after work, or even between cases.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital sits at the base of Mill Mountain and is directly under the famous Mill Mountain Star. Mill Mountain also offers a 10-mile trail system that is close to the hospital. Five minutes from CRMH is the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 470-mile continuous road that passes through Roanoke and includes 1,000 miles of trails in our region. Our area also includes famous hikes such as Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, Sharp Top, Tinker Cliffs, and the Virginia Triple Crown Loop. In addition to all the great outdoor activities, there are many unique restaurants, museums, and exhibits from every culture. We also host an extensive array of wineries and breweries. Below are links to some of our favorite outdoor activities, restaurants, and activities!
In addition to being an outdoor paradise, Roanoke is also known for being a family-friendly area and is listed as one of the top ten places to raise a family by Parenting Magazine. Roanoke County is a community of approximately 300,000 and has a small-town feel while offering big city amenities. The city has virtually no traffic congestion and we are located within driving proximity to several major cities. The cost of living in Roanoke is well below average, and there are many great public and private school options.
