Message from Dr. Phillips, PD

I'm pleased to welcome you to our residency program, here we offer a comprehensive core curriculum in medical, surgical, and pediatric dermatology as well as dermatopathology. We teach our residents to become effective multi-disciplinary team players through inpatient consultations and collaboration with other specialties in the outpatient setting. Residents can work with specialists in rheumatology, infectious diseases and surgical oncology in managing complex patients.

Our faculty subscribes to the "lead by example" philosophy. When you complete your training, our goal is that you will be a competent, compassionate, ethical physician who will be a lifelong learner and dedicated teacher for the next generation.

Program Overview

Mission Statement

The mission of our program is to train outstanding dermatologists who provide excellent care and advance our field through clinical practice, scholarship, teaching, and leadership. We are proud of the breadth and depth of experiences we offer with expert faculty in medical, surgical, cosmetic, and pediatric dermatology as well as dermatopathology. We consist of a medium-sized faculty who serve patients throughout southwestern and central Virginia areas as well as from the neighboring states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Our residents develop early autonomy through management of routine and complex dermatologic diseases in their continuity clinics, as well as subspecialty expertise through rotations in faculty clinics. In addition to the outpatient clinic experience, our program offers in-depth training in procedural dermatology, inpatient dermatology, teledermatology, and teaching and research opportunities in affiliation with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Our dermatology residency is a fully accredited three-year training program. Upon successful completion of training, residents are eligible for certification by the American Board of Dermatology and capable of becoming future leaders within the field of dermatology.
