VTCEM Student Wilderness Medicine Elective

Join us for an immersive 2-week elective in wilderness medicine set in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, where you'll gain hands-on education, scenario-based training, and FAWM credits as you make lifelong memories and friends! 

Tuition includes high-quality, hands-on education in wilderness medicine, select meals for day trips, final day cookout dinner, swift water rescue course and certification, and a technical rope course.

Elective Objectives

WM Education: Learn from educators in the field evidence based educational techniques to make your teaching more effective. Students will have the opportunity to create and carry out educational scenarios for the medical students. Skills in debriefing will be discussed.

In Hospital Care: Participate in cases to improve in hospital care of environmental emergencies.

Disaster medicine: Students will learn skills needed to work as leaders in disaster and mass casualty situations both in hospital and field settings. Case studies will be discussed. Students will gain some understanding of how to manage those scenarios as a physician leader.

Medical Director: Learn from physicians who serve as medical directors and event physicians. Use these concepts to plan medical support for a mini-expedition.
