Family Medicine Residency

Our mission is to prepare Family Medicine physicians to care for and lead within the communities they serve. We aim to:

• Develop skilled, compassionate Family Medicine physicians prepared to provide high-quality, team-based care and pursue lifelong learning across diverse practice settings.
• Foster whole-person care by preparing residents to understand and care for patients within the context of their biological, psychological, social, and environmental needs.
• Promote physician well-being and thriving, equipping residents with the skills to care for themselves, support others, and build sustainable and fulfilling careers.
• Create individualized learning plans that help residents discover their unique path within Family Medicine and achieve their personal and professional goals.
• Cultivate physician leaders prepared to lead care teams and make meaningful contributions within their practices, institutions, and communities.

We are part of the Family and Community Medicine Department, which consists of over 250 family physicians and advanced care practitioners with practices located throughout the region in urban, suburban, and rural areas.

Outpatient Care

Residents and faculty members' clinical practices are located in one of our two NCQA-recognized Level 3 patient-centered medical home offices. At each center, we have a social worker, licensed professional counselor, psychologist, dietitian, on-site pharmacists and highly skilled nurses, many of whom are involved in research or specialty procedures.

Each center is equipped with on-site laboratory services, ultrasound, minor procedure rooms and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) rooms. Each office and exam room has a computer for access to our electronic medical record system (Epic), digitized hospital X-rays and all library services.

We offer family-centered prenatal care, minor surgery and training in procedures such as colposcopy and point-of-care ultrasound.

Inpatient Care

Our residents train at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Children’s Hospital and the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
