Gastroenterology Fellowship
Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in the Carilion Clinic Virginia Tech Carilion Gastroenterology Fellowship!
Program Overview
The fellows' clinical experience encompasses inpatient consultation and outpatient specialty clinics. In the first year, fellows begin instruction in specialty clinics to study diseases of the pancreas, biliary tract, liver and endoluminal tract and comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. In addition, fellows maintain a continuity clinic that allows for the long-term follow-up of patients.
Fellows are encouraged to explore research interests during their first year; in their second and third years, fellows will develop a mature research project leading to a presentation or publication of their scholarly work.
Mission, Goals and Strengths
Fellows will demonstrate commitment to patient care through the mastery of endoscopic skills. Each fellow will achieve ASGE minimal endoscopic benchmarks in the following procedures performed: EGD; colonoscopy; and techniques for biopsy, polyp removal and hemostasis. Progress will be tracked in Medhub at 6-month intervals to ensure the endoscopy goals have been met. In addition, fellows will be exposed to cutting-edge interventional endoscopy procedures, including ERCP/EUS/Endo bariatrics and third-space endoscopy.
Fellows will strive to improve the health of the community through the comprehensive care of patients. Each fellow will be monitored and show positive improvement on Annual Milestones for Patient Care and Professionalism. After each clinic rotation, the fellow's commitment to the milestones will be tracked and scored by the supervising attending(s). Scores will be analyzed and compared to the program benchmarks established for each year and will be discussed with the fellow semi-annually over the three-year period of the fellowship.
Fellows will advance scholarship through curiosity. The fellow will identify topic areas of interest and participate in research, self-learning activities and national and regional meetings. Dedicated research block spread across the fellowship will culminate in an original research article in fellows’ area of interest. Fellows will strive to become experts in key areas of Gastroenterology with the goal of delivering superior patient care and outcomes. These activities will be reviewed semi-annually with each fellow over the three-year period of the fellowship.
