Psychiatry Residency
Retreats
The general psychiatry residency program includes two retreats each year — one full-day and one half-day. These retreats are considered protected time, meaning residents are fully excused from clinical duties to relax and connect. Past retreats include fun and memorable activities such as snow tubing, bowling, pottery painting, Harry Potter trivia and Jackbox party games, Virginia Safari Park, as well as a scenic, catered boat ride on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake!
Things to do
Several residents enjoy weekly Music Bingo at Martin’s downtown. Many residents take advantage of the nearby scenic hikes (of varying difficulties) and the walkable greenway. Roanoke is just 15 minutes away from the iconic Appalachian Trail as well as the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway. Roanoke has several holiday festivals downtown throughout the year that include music, food, and events. There are also lots of family friendly events throughout town including pumpkin patches, sunflower festivals, and summer concerts. Lastly, the Berglund Center is the local concert venue that holds events like comic con, theatre, and musical concerts as well as cultural events. We are also affiliated with Virginia Tech with lots of residents going to local games in Blacksburg, VA (45min drive away). Carilion GME has a lottery system for residents to win tickets to VT football and basketball games! We have a local minor league hockey team (Rail Yard Dawgs) and baseball team (Salem Ridge Yaks). Roanoke also has a regional airport as well as an Amtrak station for weekend getaways.
