Addiction Medicine Fellowship

Schedule Overview
The Virginia Tech-Carilion Addiction Medicine Fellowship will prepare physicians for clinical and academic careers in Addiction Medicine with a particular focus on developing and enhancing evidence-based addiction prevention and treatment services for all patients, including those vulnerable to health disparities because of limited proximity to care, poverty, race, culture, age, gender, disability, or stigma.
Through a combination of inpatient and outpatient care spanning diverse settings, fellows will receive training in the knowledge and skills to become expert clinicians and leaders in the field of Addiction Medicine.
The Addiction Medicine Fellowship curriculum is composed of thirteen four-week blocks.
- Eight of the 52 weeks will be spent at the Salem Veteran's Administration Medical Center (SVAMC) to learn to work with the stages of recovery and the medical problems that occur at different stages.
- Eight of the 52 weeks will be spent at the Roanoke Treatment Center to learn methadone management and the logistics of an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) setting.
- Four of the 52 weeks will be spent as an elective or research block.
- The Fellow will have weekly continuity clinics and protected didactic time.

**Fellows will have four (4) weeks of elective rotations. Electives will offer fellows an opportunity to deepen their experience in one of the areas of required training. With the help of the Program Director, fellows may create custom electives focused on their unique interests. some examples of possible electives include the following:
- Clinical rotations in other types of community treatment programs
- Harm reduction and community outreach
- Obstetrics and gynecology caring for pregnant patients with addictions
- Residential treatment programs
- Scholarly projects/research
- Developing and delivering addiction medicine education to other clinicians and trainees
