The Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Carilion Clinic offers robust opportunities for scholarly activity and research across a broad spectrum of infectious diseases. Fellows work alongside faculty engaged in clinical research, quality improvement, implementation science, and clinical trials focused on improving patient care and advancing the field of infectious diseases. Through mentorship and collaboration, fellows gain experience in research design, publication, and presentation of scholarly work

Ekta Bansal, MD

Dr. Ekta Bansal is actively involved in clinical and translational infectious diseases research, with interests in non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections, bloodstream infections, fungal diseases, and Clostridioides difficile infection. She serves as Principal Investigator on several funded clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for infectious diseases and leads multiple retrospective studies examining infectious disease epidemiology and outcomes in Southwest Virginia. Fellows have opportunities to participate in clinical research, scholarly publications, and clinical trial activities under her mentorship.

Tasaduq Fazili, MD

Dr. Tasaduq Fazili is actively involved in clinical infectious diseases research with interests in antimicrobial stewardship, bacteremia, fungal infections, and diagnostic imaging for infectious diseases. His current projects include studies on beta-lactam optimization in critically ill patients, cryptococcosis in Southwest Virginia, the use of PET/CT imaging in infection management, and novel therapies for Clostridioides difficile infection. Fellows have opportunities to participate in clinical research, manuscript development, and scholarly presentations under his mentorship.

Mariana Gomez, MD

Dr. Mariana Gomez's research focuses on expanding access to Hepatitis C care in Southwest Virginia and Appalachia through implementation science and population health initiatives. As Principal Investigator of the ReLink-HCV program, she leads efforts to improve linkage to care for patients with Hepatitis C and reduce health disparities in rural communities. Her work also includes quality improvement projects focused on OPAT, infectious disease and addiction medicine integration, and healthcare access optimization.

Jason Faulhaber, MD- Program Director

Dr. Jason Faulhaber's research interests include infectious diseases clinical outcomes, antimicrobial stewardship, healthcare epidemiology, and quality improvement initiatives. He is committed to fostering fellow scholarly development through mentorship in clinical research projects, publications, and presentations that advance evidence-based infectious diseases practice.
