Mission, Goals and Strengths
Our mission is to provide an unequaled, real-life learning experience in geriatric psychiatry that prepares graduates to excel in clinical geriatric care, geriatric research and geriatric education.
Our program aims to:
- Provide an interprofessional environment in which to train clinicians who provide compassionate and evidence-based mental health care, as well as resources for physical health care for older adults, their families and other caregivers
- Train clinicians who practice competently in the systems of care important to older adults, including but not limited to inpatient care, outpatient care, long-term care and in-home settings, and who can guide best practices and improve community health
- To foster an environment of inquiry, enhancing services, clinical innovation and research
- To develop the psychotherapeutic skills to direct treatment and provide therapeutic interventions in the context of assessment and medication management
A current goal is to increase our focus on rural patients, a generally under-served population, by developing collaborative approaches to rural geriatric mental health care and telehealth.
