Roanoke's location in the Blue Ridge Mountains allows access to the Blue Ridge Parkway with vast hiking, biking, riding trails and parks surrounded by panoramic vistas. The Blue Ridge Marathon is held in Roanoke. The city includes 60 parks and recreational venues, and Roanoke Valley Greenways feature miles of greenway corridor with multiple trails. Smith Mountain Lake, with 500 miles of shoreline, is only a 30-minute drive from Roanoke, and offers water sports, fishing and scenic relaxation. Twenty miles of the Appalachian Trail stretch through the Roanoke Valley, allowing immediate access to the world-famous trail. In addition, Roanoke has a very active equestrian community, and outstanding snow skiing and whitewater kayaking are only a short drive away.

Home to nearly 100,000 residents, Roanoke has fantastic and easy access to a variety of award-winning outdoor amenities. Directly behind the hospital, Mill Mountain has about 15 miles of hiking/biking trail and the Roanoke River Greenway runs right in front of the hospital. Countless additional hiking and biking opportunities surround the city, with quick access to the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest lands. The International Mountain Bike Association recently named Roanoke as the only Silver Level Ride Center on the east coast. Many of our residents enjoy standup paddle boarding, whitewater kayaking and other water sports during warmer months on the Roanoke River, James River and Smith Mountain Lake. The city features friendly neighborhoods with character, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants and various museums and historical attractions. Traveling is made easy with a regional airport, Amtrak passenger rail, and major highways all within a 20-minute drive. Many of our residents and fellows live in the City of Roanoke in either Downtown, South Roanoke City, or Southwest Roanoke City in Grandin Village.
