Clinical Sites
- Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH)
One of the largest hospitals in the state, CRMH is a 703-bed hospital with an additional 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The facility recently completed a large expansion project, adding a new Children’s Hospital, and additional growth is presently underway. CRMH is a Level I Trauma Center equipped with a Neuro-ICU and epilepsy monitoring unit. Carilion employs approximately 600 physicians representing more than 60 specialties, including all major medical, surgical and psychiatric specialties. CRMH has approximately 180,000 Emergency Department visits and about 40,000 admissions annually.
- Salem VA Medical Center (VAMC)
The Salem VAMC, located approximately 10 minutes from the Carilion campus, is a 182-bed facility that provides inpatient and outpatient care to veterans throughout Virginia. Additional facilities include a 90-bed extended care rehabilitation center.
Both Carilion and the Salem VAMC use a modern electronic record and have private patient rooms, ample conference rooms, lecture halls, an on-site library, dictation areas, dining facilities and on-call rooms with showers. Residents have access to state-of-the-art neuroimaging and neurodiagnostic facilities.
- Carilion Riverside 3 Outpatient Ambulatory Neurology Clinic
Ambulatory neurology at Carilion is contained within Riverside 3, a modern clinic space adjacent to the medical school and research institute, and a five-minute walk from CRMH. Riverside 3 contains a dining facility, faculty/staff kitchen, pharmacy, laboratory facilities, an imaging suite, conference rooms, locker rooms with showers and dedicated office space for residents. Examination rooms are equipped with standard medical resources, including ophthalmoscopes, equipment for electromyography and computers with the capacity to view imaging studies.
Conference rooms and lecture halls are present at all clinical sites (CRMH, the Salem VAMC and Riverside 3). In each case, these facilities include computers/projection monitors for on-screen presentations. Writing boards are also available for brainstorming, formulating clinical cases and similar purposes. Some lecture halls at CRMH offer two-way video streaming to other Carilion sites, allowing for real-time interaction between a geographically remote audience and lecturer.
Contained within Riverside are subspecialty clinics for ALS, muscular dystrophy, deep brain stimulation management, multiple sclerosis and other disciplines.
