Orthopaedic Surgery Residency
Welcome
Thank you for your interest in our program. We are dedicated providing a fulfilling experience to our residents, delivering comprehensive training to ensure graduates are prepared for a successful career in orthopaedics.
About Our Program
- Program History
Our institution has a long-standing history of orthopaedic surgery education. For more than 50 years, we proudly partnered with the University of Virginia to host their orthopaedic surgery residents (2 x PGY-3 and 2 x PGY-4 residents, 4 total), and for nearly a decade we collaborated with Larkin Community Hospital in the same capacity (1 resident per 3 month block). While we cherish these partnerships, our organizations have grown within the communities they serve to such an extent that in 2023 our institution applied for and was approved to start our own accredited orthopaedic surgery residency. After much planning and hard work on behalf of the Carilion Clinic Department of Orthopaedics and Graduate Medical Education, we are excited to announce that our first class of residents will matriculate in July 2024!
- Mission Statement
We seek to train fulfilled, altruistic, and technically excellent orthopaedic surgeons equipped with the problem-solving skills and academic curiosity to provide state of the art musculoskeletal care to the communities they serve.
- Program Aims
- To train technically excellent orthopedic surgeons we will provide a robust basic surgical skills curriculum and early hands on operative experience with an emphasis on technical mastery and one on one surgical mentorship to achieve proficiency across a broad range of orthopedic procedures.
- To develop robust problem solving skills by allowing graduated and progressive care responsibility.
- To teach academic curiosity and promote evidence based practice by pursing scholarship and research activity.
- To impart values of duty and service to patient and community, modeled by our own actions and exemplified in our lives and practices.
- To provide a diverse and inclusive training environment that allows for health and wellness and resists burnout.
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion, we believe that embracing diversity, promoting equity and fostering inclusion are vital and integral to cultivating a vibrant, compassionate and socially responsible healthcare workforce that serves diverse patient populations and achieves optimal patient outcomes. Together, we strive to create an environment that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and provides an equitable platform for all residents to excel and make a meaningful impact in their medical careers.
We recognize and appreciate the richness that diversity brings to both our medical and GME community. We believe that a diverse community of residents, faculty and staff enhances our collective ability to provide patient-centered care, engage in innovative research and develop cultural humility within our health care professionals.
We are dedicated to creating an equitable and fair environment where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive, grow and succeed. We are committed to identifying and addressing any systemic barriers that may hinder the advancement of individuals from historically marginalized or underrepresented groups within our GME community.
We strive to foster an inclusive culture where every member of our GME community feels respected, valued and included. We embrace the power of diverse perspectives, experiences and ideas to drive innovation, collaboration and excellence. We aim to create a sense of belonging, where individuals can bring their authentic selves into this program to the table, contributing to a vibrant and enriching community.
We hold ourselves accountable to these principles by regularly assessing our progress, identifying areas for improvement and taking action to address disparities and promote inclusivity within our GME programs. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Learning Environment Advisory Committee and the Carilion Clinic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office provide part of that accountability.
The Annual Institutional Review Plan for Carilion GMEC includes specific outcomes for diversity and inclusion, such as reviewing all curricula to foster an inclusive and anti-bias learning environment; assessing each program’s method of trainee evaluation to assure they are fair and equitable; and developing and monitoring each program’s plan to recruit a diverse group of residents, fellows, faculty and staff.
