Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Sites
- Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital
Carilion Clinic Roanoke Memorial Hospital is an 800 bed Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center located on the Carilion Medical Center Campus in Roanoke, Virginia. The hospital serves a referral base of 1.4 million people and serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine. The Carilion Medical Center Campus includes Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine, the Community Hospital Outpatient OR and Rehabilitation Center, and associated outpatient clinic and procedural sites. The orthopaedic surgery service performs greater than 6000 surgical cases annually at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (not including the other sites on campus) spanning all major orthopaedic sub-specialties.. This will serve as the primary site for the majority of resident rotations.
- Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital
Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital contains four (4) outpatient operating rooms and will also contain short stay 24-48 hour rooms for outpatient or minimal inpatient stay total joint replacements. Residents will participate in outpatient hand surgery, outpatient foot and ankle surgery, and outpatient sports medicine and arthroscopy at this site. They will also participate in total joint arthroplasty at this site, including shoulder, knee, and hip. All faculty within the previously mentioned disciplines are credentialed at this site which is under the umbrella of Carilion Medical Center. This would include 5 adult reconstruction attendings, 6 hand surgery attendings, 3 foot and ankle attendings, and 4 sports medicine attendings.
- Roanoke Ambulatory Surgical Center
Roanoke Ambulatory Surgery Center is an outpatient center consisting of 6 operating rooms and is 50% owned by Carilion Clinic. Residents will participate primarily in sports medicine and hip arthroscopy at this site. They will also participate in hand surgery and foot and ankle surgery at this site. Depending on future developments, they may also participate in outpatient joint replacement at this site including knee replacement, hip replacement, and shoulder replacement. All faculty in the adult reconstruction, hand, foot and ankle, and adult reconstruction sections are credentialed at this site and would be available to work with and teach residents.
- Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences
The Carilion Institute for Orthopedics and Neurosurgery (ION) contains 2 outpatient hand procedural rooms where a number of hand procedures are performed by all 6 members of the hand surgery section. The residents will participate in these procedures during their hand surgery rotation. ION is under the governance of Carilion Medical Center.
- Carilion New River Valley Medical Center
Carilion New River Valley Medical Center is a 146 bed community hospital located in Christiansburg, Virginia which is a 45 minute drive from the primary site (mileage reimbursement provided). Residents will work here as an upper level PGY-4 resident with four different attendings at this site. They will participate in a community oriented general orthopaedic practice and also have the opportunity to work with the Virginia Tech Athletes to gain a perspective on major university sports coverage. In addition to the general orthopaedic aspects of the rotation, they will work in the specialty specific areas of foot and ankle surgery, adult reconstruction, and sports medicine and arthroscopy depending on the individual attending they are working with that day. They will not take overnight call at this site. They will continue to participate in the main educational didactic sessions at the primary site and will commute to and from the site each day (though a call room at the facility with shower, bed, and internet access will be provided in case to tired to drive home at end of day).
